FAMILY HISTORY IN RETAILING
1923: The Paine family began a long tradition in the hardware industry when Lou Paine rented a shop in Brunswick.
1939: The first store was acquired which became the first Paine's Biz Buzz hardware store. This store is still owned today by the Paine family and is now known as Rex Paine Mitre 10, Thornbury. The second generation of the Paine family Jack, Fred and Reg joined the business later on.
1967: The third generation of Paines joined the family business including Reg's eldest son Rex. Over the following years, another six sons joined the successful family business and Lou Paine's belief in the value of customer service was again instilled in the next generation of Paine's. Another 4 stores were added over the following years.
1982: The business was divided and Reg Paine Nominess was founded.
1984: Thornbury store joined Mitre 10 and underwent extensive renovations widening the shop to take a large frontage on High Street.
1993: A new site, Watsonia Timber and Hardware, is acquired by the business. This was the Paines first foray into the trade market.
1994: The fourth generation of Paine's, Rex's sons Shaun and Travis started full-time work in the family business, and again Lou Paine's belief in the value of customer service was carried over.
1995: The acquisition of another site, Danaher's Timber and Hardware in Heidelberg, further strengthening the Paines position in the trade market.
1996: Reg Paine retired handing over the business to his sons, Rex, John and Noel.
2001: Danahers Mitre 10 wins Retailer of the Year Award from the Hardware Journal.
2002: First annual Paine Group Awards Night. Team Member of the Year awarded to Craig Johnston - assistant manager at Danahers Mitre10 Hardware.
2002: Rex retires from full-time work.
2004: April - Rex, John & Noel agree to divide the family business. A new beginning with the launch of Rex Paine Timber & Hardware. This new company now operates the Thornbury and Watsonia stores and the Watsonia Timber yard. Shaun Paine is the General Manager for the company with his wife Natalia Paine managing administration.
2005: There are many firsts for the company such as an off site trade night.
2006: April Acquisition of a fourth site, Westgate Mitre10 in Altona. Sof Manousopoulos becomes a director with Shaun & Rex Paine of R Paine Investments which now owns and runs the businesses.
2007: June - Sof Manousopoulos leaves the business to pursue a sales career.
2007: November - The Watsonia Shop site is sold on 45 Watsonia Road and will finish trading mid January '08.
2008: June - After unsuccessful attempts to sell Westgate Mitre10 it is closed as a Mitre10 and re-opens in July as a clearance store for the remaining stock.
2008: July to Dec - Rex and Shaun work closley to re-establish the Thornbury store as a legacy for the family name and expand the Charcoal Spit business as a niche for the area.
2009: Shaun joins the Watsonia timber team |
